How to plan family life together

The family planner keeps a household’s chores, points and calendar in one place: the children see what is theirs today, take turns fairly and earn points, and everyone sees school, activities and appointments. This manual walks you through it step by step.

1. Getting started

The family planner is an app of DevQuake and uses your DevQuake account, so there is no separate sign-up.

  1. Sign in on devquake.com (or create an account and confirm your email).
  2. Open Your account → Available projects and Subscribe to “Family planner”.
  3. Open the app and create a family: give it a name, for example your family name or “Home”. You become its first parent.

The toolbar shows the app’s name (tap it to come back to the start), full screen and the DevQuake mark. The manual and the version notes are at the bottom of every page; your language and theme are set in Your account → Profile on DevQuake.

2. Members and roles

Open the Members tab. Every member has a name, a colour (shown on their chores and events) and a role:

  • Parent: manages the family: members, chores, points and the calendar.
  • Child: sees the family and ticks their own chores to earn points.
  • Helper: grandparents, a babysitter or another parent: sees the calendar and the chores.

Children without an account: tap Add a child, give a name, an optional birthday (the year is optional too) and a colour. Parents tick their chores for them. Members with an account use their own DevQuake birthday: tap My birthday next to your name, allow the family planner once, and it is the same in every app.

Photos: tap Add a photo next to a member to choose a picture or take a selfie; parents can do it for anyone, everyone else for themselves. The family’s creator adds a family picture under Family settings. Photos are seen by your family and connected families.

People with a DevQuake account join with an invite link: choose the role first (parent, child or helper), then send the link, its code or the QR code. Whoever opens it while signed in becomes a member with that role straight away, a child with their own account too. You can also add people from your DevQuake referrals and pick their role. New link makes the old link of that role stop working.

Older children can have their own DevQuake account: send them the invite link for Child: they join as a child and tick their chores themselves.

3. Chores

In the Chores tab parents tap Add a chore:

  • How often: once (it stays on the list until it is done), every day, or on some weekdays.
  • Points: earned each time the chore is done (0 for none).
  • Who does it: choose one or more members, or nobody if anyone can do it.
  • Take turns: with several people, one does it each time, in the order shown (move them up with ↑). Without it, everyone chosen does it.

The list shows how often each chore repeats, its points, the next day it is due and whose turn is next. Deleting a chore keeps the points already earned.

4. Today

The Today tab shows each member’s chores for today, the next seven days of the calendar and everyone’s points.

  1. Tap the circle next to a chore when it is done: it turns green and the points are added.
  2. Tapped by mistake? Tap it again to undo it, and the points are taken off.

Children and helpers tick only their own chores; parents can tick for anyone. A one-time chore from an earlier day stays on the list, marked “Since …”, until it is done.

Works with other apps: connect Shared shopping lists to see your open lists on Today, open a list and come back, and add an item in one step; connect the workout tracker to put your weekly training in the calendar (“Open in Workout” on those events). “Works with” at the bottom of every page connects them on DevQuake; disconnect any time under Account → Connected apps.

5. Points and rewards

The Points tab shows each child’s points and the latest entries. Parents use the form below them:

  • Redeem a reward: take points off for something you agreed on, such as pocket money, a trip or a game. A child cannot go below zero.
  • Give bonus points: extra points, for example for help nobody asked for.

Agree on the prices together, for example 100 points for a cinema visit. Children save up more happily when they know what the points are worth.

6. The family calendar

The Calendar tab shows two weeks at a time; use the arrows to move and This week to come back.

  1. Parents tap Add an event and give a title, the day and time (or All day) and the duration.
  2. Choose Every week for trainings and lessons, with an optional last day.
  3. Tick who is invited: your family and connected families are listed with everyone ticked; untick the ones who are not coming.
  4. Add the place and the details (what it is, what to bring), choose the email reminders (1 hour, 1 day or 1 week before), and save.

Every time is shown in your own time zone, so family members in another country see it in theirs. A weekly event keeps its time when the clocks change. Change edits or deletes the whole series.

Photos: once an event has started, tap Photos under it to add pictures from the camera or the library (as many as your family has members), replace them, add a comment and tag people by tapping the photo where they are. Tap a photo to see it full screen; swipe or use the arrows to see the others. Only the people who see the event see its photos.

7. Connected families

Connect your family with the family of grandparents, cousins or friends, and plan birthday parties, trips and activities together.

  1. A parent opens Members → Connected families and sends the connection link (or its code or QR code) to a parent of the other family.
  2. That parent opens the link, chooses which of their families to connect, and taps Connect the families.
  3. Both families now see each other’s members, and their parents can invite them to events.

Events of a connected family that invite your members appear in your calendar marked “Organized by …”; only the organizing family can change them. Everyone invited who has an account gets the reminders the organizer chose, by email. Disconnect ends the connection for both families.

8. Privacy and leaving

Only the members of a family see it. Names and birthdays of members without an account are stored only in this app. A member’s own birthday is kept on DevQuake and shown here only once they allow it; connected families never see birthdays.

  • Leave a family in the Members tab; your ticks and points in it are removed.
  • The person who created the family can delete it, with everything in it, under Family settings.
  • When you unsubscribe from the app or delete your DevQuake account, your data is removed. A family you created passes to another parent with an account; without one, it is deleted.
